Moving house is up there with the most stressful life events. Just the thought of packing all your stuff up into boxes probably fills you with dread – especially if you have a deadline fast approaching.
Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to make the whole process a lot easier. Whether you are moving just down the road or you are going to an entirely different country, these 3 tips will certainly help.
It’s time to embrace a new beginning!
Hire Movers
One of the first things people talk about when they talk about moving is the cost of hiring professional movers and how much they could have saved by doing it themselves. It might be true that moving companies can be expensive but when you compare the cost to your stress levels, you might reconsider.
If you are moving over state lines, a cross country moving company could well be worth its weight in gold. They make everything from packing up the van to filling your new home with the boxes a lot easier. They literally do the heavy lifting for you.
Label Your Boxes Properly
There is nothing worse than knowing you have something you need and not being able to find it. Being surrounded by a dozen identical cardboard boxes and no idea what could be in any of them is a nightmare!
Labeling your boxes as you pack will make life a lot easier once you arrive. There are lots of different systems you could use but numbering each box will help you count your things in and out of the moving van and putting the correct room on each box will also give the movers a clue as to where it should go.
You should also pack an additional box of things you will want straight away as well as a suitcase each. If you imagine that your first week in the new house is like a holiday, you should have everything you need to be able to take a more leisurely approach to unpacking.
Start Packing Early
As soon as you decide to move house, you should start the process of decluttering and packing – non-essentials first, building up to items that are used more often. The sooner you start the process, the easier it will be to meet your deadline without a panicked rush in the last couple of days.
Moving house is a really good opportunity to evaluate your lifestyle and all the stuff you have. Since moving is a new beginning of sorts, you shouldn’t feel bad about getting rid of things that don’t spark joy any more or things that are old and tired. A pre-move yard sale is a great way to get rid of the things you don’t need any more and will lighten the load you are carrying with you.
Moving house will always be stressful but the more organized you are, the simpler life will be at either end of the move. Time is the key so start well before you think you have to!
