After 2 years of having my possessions boxed up in a storage unit, I am finally settled in Albuquerque after moving from Denver. While many people focus on spring cleaning this time of year, I have been focused on creating a home out of my new space. Everything has been unpacked and unwrapped, and now I am in the process of cleaning all my possessions so they are presentable and usable when I put them in their proper place.
My favorite room to decorate and spruce up is the living room. This is where family and friends come together, and this is the room I most feel allows me to express myself. My living room always is cozy and inviting. If your living room needs a makeover, here are five simple steps to brightening up your living room:
1. Choose light colored decor.
Lighter and cooler colors give the illusion of a more open space and brighten dark furniture. You don’t need to add many pieces. Just a few good decor items make my black bookshelf look ten times better!
My boyfriend was kind enough to give me a couch he wasn’t using. This particular couch is black and is an odd shape, so a slip cover will not fit it.
Furniture is expensive and I am saving for a nice set that I like. In the meantime, I am covering the black couch with a light blanket.
2. Add a large mirror.
Large mirrors not only reflect light, but they make a room appear larger than it really is.
3. Add a personal touch.
Decorate your space with a few things that make you happy, such as a photo or memento from a favorite memory. This is the very first picture of me and my boyfriend from when we first met 10 years ago. It is my favorite and brings a smile to my face, and a great smile can brighten any room. 🙂
4. Clean mirrors and picture frames.
I can’t believe the gorgeous weather in New Mexico right now. I love to open the windows and have the fresh air come in. Well, it’s also been windy, which means that more than fresh air comes in. Dirt and dust love to settle in the most visible places. For some reason, I let dirt build up on glass surfaces. I see it and I ignore it. Well it’s not going to clean itself and I have to just dive right in. I use Windex® Original Glass Wipes to dust off of glass picture frames and the mirrors. The satisfaction of having clean glass makes me wonder what I was even thinking in the first place!
I have been a loyal user of Windex® for years and years. I am not ashamed to say I use it on every hard surface in my apartment, including windows, mirrors, glass shower doors, glass top stoves, and more. The wipes are fantastic because the clean up is so easy! And it cleans and shines the first time, every time.
5. Wash the windows so the sun can shine through.
Cleaning windows it my least favorite chore because the windows in my apartment are very large! Windex® Original Glass Cleaner makes it easier because it starts working on fingerprints, dirt, and other messes even before you wipe.
I was so excited to learn that Albuquerque had a Smith’s, from the Kroger Family of Stores, that I could shop at. After having King Soopers in Denver, I was spoiled. I found Windex® in the cleaning aisle at Smiths, just as expected!
I love my new apartment so much and think it is really coming together. Having a clean space is like having a clean mind. It is good for my mental health. Chances are high that you have not just moved to a new state like I have, but spring cleaning should not be ignored. So, Don’t Stand for Dirty™!
