What to Consider When Choosing Carpet for Your Home

A carpet isn’t just for covering the floor; it will also give your house that cosy feeling that makes it feel like home. Somehow, the carpet that you put down can significantly impact the way that you feel about your house. With that in mind, it’s important to take your time to select the right carpet if you are getting a new one fitted. A good carpet should last for many years, and you’ll also need to make sure that you like how it looks and feels.

Function

The first thing to consider is how you want your carpet to function. In some cases, it may simply be because you want to improve the feel of a room; however, carpets can also provide sound insulation, heat insulation, and decoration to your room. If you have pets or kids, it’s important to consider the durability of the carpet and how well it is going to stand up to everyday use in your family. You should also think about the room or area in your home where the carpet is going to go; carpets on stairs, for example, are often walked on much more often compared to other rooms in the home and will usually need to be more durable and resistant.

Fibre Type

The fibre type is another factor to carefully consider when choosing a carpet for your home. The fibres will affect the look, feel, and durability of the carpet. Wool carpet is a great choice if you are looking for a comfortable, cosy carpet that helps to keep your room warm in the winter, but on the downside, it can be expensive and stain removal is difficult. Nylon carpets are often the ideal choice for busy families since they are durable, easy to maintain, and easy to get stains from, although it’s a little less comfortable compared to wool. Polyester fibre is ideal if you need a cheap carpet or want a brightly-coloured floor, but it is not as durable as nylon. Carpet shops in London offer samples for all different fibre types, so it’s worth ordering a few to see which you prefer.

Choosing Underlay

Once you have chosen a carpet, you will need to get a suitable underlay. This is the part that will not only protect your carpet from wear and tear but also determines how comfortable and resilient the carpet is. Choose underlay that is neither too hard nor too soft. It’s also worth considering the thickness of the underlay and the carpet on top of each other to ensure that there is enough room under doors. If the carpet and underlay are too high, the door may not move once it is fitted and you will need to have the door reduced in size or replaced. You may choose to have thicker underlay in rooms where there isn’t a lot of traffic throughout the day such as bedrooms.

Choosing the right carpet for your home is a big decision as the flooring can make a huge impact on the look and feel of a house.
