Whether you’re going on a first date, a fancy night out with girlfriends, or going to an interview for your dream job, dressing to impress is definitely part of the mix. After all, what you’re wearing is part of the first impression the other person will get from you, and first impressions are important. How you dress is one of the ways you send a message about who you are, which can make or break a first impression.

It’s also important to feel comfortable in what you’re wearing. You shouldn’t choose an outfit that you don’t like or don’t feel comfortable in just to make a statement, because how you feel is just as important (if not more important!) than how you look to others. It’s also crucial to consider the setting of where you’re going because this can change how you dress too.

With all that in mind, here are some tips on what to wear when you want to make a good first impression.

Stick to the dress code

If you’re heading off to a place with a dress code, whether it’s implied or stated outright, it’s critical to follow it. If you intentionally ignore the dress code, it could be seen as disrespectful, which is not what you’re going for if you’re after a positive first impression. Make sure you understand the dress code of the place you’re going to before settling on your outfit. If you aren’t quite sure, business casual is usually a safe bet, but you can usually ask around or do a bit of research to get a good idea of what is appropriate to wear.

Designer clothes

Of course, labels aren’t everything, but designer fashions are typically much more fashion-forward, trendy, and of higher quality that not only looks better but feels better as well. There certainly are some situations where a designer piece will go a long way, as opposed to a fast-fashion piece or a piece you found on sale on a bargain rack. These situations may be more formal, like a night out to a fancy club or restaurant, a wedding or black-tie party, or a high-powered job interview at a ritzy office you desperately want to land.

Designer clothing doesn’t necessarily mean you have to break the bank either. There are plenty of reasonably priced shops that sell designer brands that can fit into your budget, whether you’re looking for regular sizes or plus sizes, like the retailer Froxx

Accent pieces

Accenting your outfit with key accessories is a great way to make your look more put together without too much hassle or planning. Adding conservative accent pieces can elevate your outfit from boring to trendy. Jewelry is always a good addition to any outfit, but try not to overdo it with the bling. A simple, understated bracelet, watch, or necklace paired with elegant earrings can go a long way. Additionally, adding a silk scarf or necktie instead of a necklace can change your entire outfit. Do your best to avoid too many accessories, as this can clutter up your look.
