Colorado Ballet Presents “The Nutcracker” – Review

I finally got to see The Nutcracker ballet this year! I grew up watching the tv special and have always wanted to see it in person. Christmas is my favorite time of year and this ballet always gets me in the spirit. The music is so amazing and I love the fantastical story.

My friends and I had a nice girls night out by getting dressed up, going out to eat sushi at our favorite sushi restaurant, and then going to see The Nutcracker downtown Denver at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House on Saturday at the 6:30pm showing. I loved going at this time because we got to walk around downtown Denver and enjoy all the Christmas lights.

We had wonderful seats in the Parterre right behind the Orchestra section. I loved that each seat had a little screen that told you what each scene was. If you are unfamiliar with the story, this was very helpful, since there is no talking, only music and dance.

The stage props were so colorful and beautiful, as well as the dancers costumes. One of my favorite parts was the snow scene where “snow” actually fell down on the dancers and it was so magical!  I also loved Act II in the Land of Sweets when the celebration of sweets from around the world occurs. The Arabian dancers put on such a display of strength, and the Russian dancers were so fun with the upbeat music.

This was not only my first time seeing The Nutcracker, but seeing any ballet in person. The dancers are so graceful and strong, I have a new appreciation for ballet. You have to see this in person to understand!

The holidays are not complete until you see this seasonal favorite featuring unforgettable characters, dazzling costumes, classic choreography and Tchaikovsky’s extraordinary arrangement performed live by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra. This dazzling spectacle of glittering snowflakes and shimmering sugarplums will transport your whole family to the Land of Sweets.
